Our History - Part 1
A short description of the family I come from. Its history, roots (starting from my grandfather), places where we are all at, and branches attached to the tree. Just a short description in this one, others to follow.
Dharwadkar literally means from Dharwad. Dharwad is a city in the north Karnataka in India. That's where my ancestors came from almost 250 years ago. Later they migrated to Pune in Maharashtra. There they became the court astrologers for the then rulers, the Peshwas. I have been told that our surname initially was Joshi (which is a colloquial usage for Jyotishi, meaning astrologer). But the Peshwas started calling my ancestors as Dharwadkar as they came from Dharwad and so the name stuck. Who's going to challenge the ruler? Right?.
Anyway, skipping generations and years to come to my grandfather, he was the third of four siblings born to Vyankatesh and Saraswati (My great grandparents). Three sons and one sister. Born in 1916 he was named as Mukund. Later he became a doctor (LCPS - Licentiate College of Physicians & Surgeons) from Bombay (now called as Mumbai) and joined government service to serve the country's poor. He was married to Sindhu Jambhekar - later named as Mrs. Kunda Mukund Dharwadkar and they had 4 sons out of which 3 survived. They were named Arun, (Late) Pramod and Mangalmurthy (shortened to Mangal).
Arun, the eldest one, then married Shobhana and they had 3 children, Kalpana (later renamed as Supriya Bhat after marriage), Anand and Mukul (that's me here). So I am the youngest son of the eldest son of the third son of Vyankatesh and Saraswati. But we digress. So my grandfather was posted in Shevgaon as a government doctor. Later on, post independence, he resigned his post and moved on to Aurangabad for his children's education as Aurangabad had better facilities and educational infrastructure. There he started his private practice and hospital. He was a very skilled and sympathetic doctor who soon grew to fame and was liked by all (Even now, 15 years after his death, people still recognise us as the descendants of Dr. Dharwadkar).

Re: about dharwadkars
Nice to make acquaintance with Dharwadkars. If interested, you can get it touch with me on my email address and maybe we can compare family trees.

hi mukul, thats a very good initative of yours to build family tree.I am willing to contribute information from Vishwasrao Dharwadkar family to build the Dharwadkar family tree.
The Dharwadkars...
Interesting to know about your family history. My family name is Dharwadkar as well. My forefathers did hail from Dharwad. But we are all settled in Karnataka itself. Don't know if we are related.......
nice site
i am not so computer savvy but have a true appreciation for a site that offers so much and is so well organized and just enjoy learning something of others here on our truly "it's a small world after all" planet. Upon your family may blessings fall of good health, much wealth and fine wine and may you enjoy them over a long lifetime.
just an fyi share for you about my family:
i am in texas and am 8th gen Texan. Last 4 Gens have included Texas Rangers, some of the original Border Patrol officers, police officers and sheriffs, along with pilots, teachers, writers and sales/mkting reps. My husband is Lebanese and Syrian and has family tree back to the Hemites. ...blessings, j.p.
From Aurangabad
I think if I read this properly, I used to be the neighbour of Mangalmurthy and family when they lived in
Saraswati colony in Aurangabad. Amrit is their son's name.
Re: From Aurangabad
I think it's nice to reach out and renew old acquiantances. However, a name would have been very helpful. If you knew Amrit, then maybe we know each other also. I used to be at his place a lot playing.

Still its a good initiative by Mukul.I endorse him for his efforts.

family tree
Hi Mukul, going to back to the Peshwa era, my father told me that the astrologer generation precisely foretold a victory in one of the battles, as a result of the which the Joshis (our ancestors) were presented with the jaaghir of Dharwad. Later when the Mughals or British whoever invaded Dharwad, the Joshis fled to Aurangabad and hence came to be known as Dharwadkars. If you feel this info holds true, could you add it up in your family tree description? :)
