Da Vinci Code and Catholicism
The Da Vinci Code is currently the hottest topic of discussion. Right from Vatican to US to India. Everybody is talking about the book and the soon to be released film. My take...
The book Da Vinci Code is a work of fiction. Isn't this enough for every one to read it, enjoy the mesmerising plot and move on? But as always different groups of people have raised objections / concerns over the film. First it was the book. Authors of previously published books which talked about the Holy Grail sued Dan Brown, author of the Da Vinci Code alleging him of stealing their ideas.
Now the Roman Catholic church and Vatican is campaigning hard to refute all the claims made in the book. Apparently same sentiment is in India, a decidedly secular country. The catholic community in India had demanded a ban on the movie release in India. Thankfully though sense prevailed and the Government of India has given a green light to release the movie. This is not the first time and certainly not going to be the last time.
Which brings some questions in my mind. Why? Why bother? If the concept of Holy Grail and bloodline of Jesus Christ is all imagination, then why is the Vatican taking so pains to suppress it? People will watch the movie, enjoy and forget it. Raising a controversy or objection will ensure that people remember this and some people may also carry out their own research, whatever the result might be. It leads me to believe that the Vatican and the Roman Catholic Church has something to hide which is why there is so much noice about it and protests.
Other thing that bothers me is Christianism (or specifically Roman Catholics) is not the only religion and it is not also the most followed religion (There is more muslims in the world than any other religion). So how does this deception (if it is a deception at all) be the biggest deception of mankind. Personally I and all the people of my religion (which is Hinduism) are not affected nor bothered by whether Jesus Christ married or not. Then why call it as something that could change the history of mankind? At most it would change history of Roman Catholics. Nothing more.
Disclaimer: I am a Hindu and maintain a secular view about religions. I have nothing against any religion in this world. I have just expressed my views and opinion.
