Virtual home address
My opinion on how technology has changed our perception on being at a place
Consider what I told one of friends when she asked me, "Is your email address the same?".
Me (quote): "Yes of course it is the same. Do you think an email address is the same as my house to change so often?"
This happened while I was talking to one of my friends today on her birthday. We were very close friends and she treats me as her elder brother. That was during my college days. I have moved on from that city now and now I am currently in the US. We hardly have met. It seems that she wanted to contact me for some reason (I have a house in the same city). I had left the town for some time and moved on to Bangalore. But she was not aware that I had moved again to the US.
So she had tried to call my in-laws, but unfortunately they also are not in the town for some reason. So admist all these moves and contacts, what remains constant? In good old days, your house was supposed to be the go-to place if anyone wanted to contact you. But in the age of information revolution and world getting flatter, what remains constant?
Email addresses seems to be the only thing that we tend to keep the same. Of course we may add new email addresses, but we always will keep one primary for our communication. As long as you have internet connection, people can reach you no matter where you go. Other example would be, a website. For example, if someone wants to contact me and knows my website, can come here and shoot me an email or post a comment. But not everyone has a website. So the true constant in today's world in my opinion remains the email address.
