Narayana Murthy as President?

by Mukul Dharwadkar last modified 2006-03-14 10:06

Rumours currently floating in India

I read with mild surprise that NR Narayana Murthy, Chairman and Chief Mentor of Infosys will be nominated for the post of President of India once the term of the incumbent president Honourable APJ Abdul Kalam is over. If that happens then it would be a step in the right direction with one very capable & visionary president succeeded by another equally capable persion and a visionary. It would also signify the shift in priorities for India.

Dr. Kalam brought in a much needed focus on science and the need to increase awareness and importance of science at the grassroot levels of the society. It was former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayi who brought in the focus with his modification of slogan of Lal Bahadur Shastri - "Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan". NRN would bring in the focus on technology and perhaps would help to unleash the potential that India has to become a major global power.

India needs more people like Dr. Manmohan Singh, Dr. Kalam and NRN into position of power not only at the top levels of bureaucracy but also at the local levels where corruption and abuse of power is rampant. We can have great visions but if does not get implemented at the grassroots nothing is going to change.

Having said that, every step in the right direction is a progress made.
