What a match!!!
My view of today's match between Australia and South Africa
Wow!!! What a super match it was!! I simply could not believe when I saw the scores. For one thing the score at the end of the first innings was unbelievable. 434 for 4? How is that even possible? I mean Srilanka had scored nearly 400 (398 to be precise), but that was against a lowly Kenya playing their first few ODIs with Arvinda DeSilva, Sanath Jayasuriya at their full flow and at their peaks. (For the entire list of highest team scores click here.)
Even more incredible is that South Africa chased it down successfully to win the match and the series. So now what target is safe? What caused it? Australia are still searching for a reason as to how did it happen? I am sure Australia would have thought that the game was wrapped up after Ponting's incredible inning of 164 of just 105 balls. To be honest, I don't like that bloke a lot. Still I think he is the game's one of the most destructive and explosive batsman. He is right up there after Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag, of course. But Herschelle Gibbs showed that he is also equally destructive on his day. The innings he played was simply outstanding. I thought that he was going to score 200 in this match. But that was not to be. He probably just run out of steam or lost concentration.
As a romantic, I would like to think that this record would take a long long time be broken; both the highest innings total and the highest chased total. But the fact is that the game is changing and developing at a furious pace and records are plummeting even faster. Remember the highest test score by an individual? Broken twice in a year, first by Matthew Hayden and then Lara surpassed that even quicker.
I would not be surprised if one of these records would be broken by the forthcoming world cup in caribbean. But still as a cricket romantic I would like to think that this record won't be broken for a long long time.
What do you think?
