Speed up your computer - 4

In this installment of the series of posts, I continue with some more services that can be disabled on your Windows XP computer. Based on this series one of my friends called me in to take a look at his computer and I disabled just 50% of the services that I plan to list here and the performance improved at least 3 times.

Service Name	Description	Suggestion	Remarks
Machine Debug Manager	This service manages Visual Studio debugging	Disable	Visual Studio debugging information will not be available. Do you really do programming and debugging in Visual Studio at your home? If yes, then you probably have a very high end computer and don't have to worry about performance issues anyway
Messenger	This service transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger	Disable	Alerter messages will not be transmitted. This service is relevant only in Enterprise environment where there is a client server environment.
Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider	This service manages software-based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service	Disable	Software-based volume shadow copies cannot be managed. Leave this enabled if you Windows Backup to take backups of your data. Otherwise you can safely disable it.
NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing	This service enables an authorized user to access this computer remotely by using NetMeeting over a corporate intranet	Disable	This is not applicable in the home network and in office environment there are better options to achieve the same thing. However if you use NetMeeting to communicate with your family and share desktops (?) then you should leave this enabled.
Network DDE	This service provides network transport and security for Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) for programs running on the same computer or on different computers	Disable	DDE transport and security will be unavailable. So?
